Scripture cannot be read a verse at a time (I intentionally removed the verse numbers) Even in this small passage, I had to think in terms of the entire history of Israel, including the most important even in the history of the Israelites: the exile. Not unified or read as if spoken by a single voice, but never read in isolation
I'm suddenly welcomed into a conversation where I am one of many voices, not a passive student "learning the lesson." I get to shape the lesson
It might not be about me or relevant to my life in any way whatsoever. It may have been very important to a person or community at some time in the past, it may be very important to someone in the distant future⦠but not everything is about me or for me (and I don't feel guilty about setting aside the passages which don't seem relevant to me at this point in my life--after having given them proper attention). There are things I can't apply (or shoudln't apply) to my life. What matters is that I'm in the conversation
